My main interests in research are mechanisms to protect the heart against ischemia-reperfusion injury. As a medical doctor, my goal is to extrapolate findings in basic research into the clinical care area. Studying signal transduction pathways leading to protection against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury will help us in developing new therapeutic strategies to limit myocardial infarct size. Limitation of myocardial infarct size will mitigate development of remodeling and heart failure resulting in an improved cardiac function and a better quality of life in patients suffering from ischemic heart disease.
